The Romanovs
Written by Pacdan
Probably one of the best bands you’ve never heard of, The Romanovs (previously known as Morgan and the Hidden Hands) create music that really defies my best attempts to categorize. Sometimes their sound is very dark cabaret, while at other times it seems to recall the work of Tori Amos and Kate Bush, but with a greater influence from classical instrumentation. The lyrics sometimes remind me of Opheliac-era Emilie Autumn with songs like Nice Day for a Murder and Four Things with the line “I can think of four things I’d like to do, all involve a knife and four different parts of you,” but they still retain an entirely original feel, delving into a unique array of musical ideas. Singer Morgan Kibby’s voice is soft but commanding, sometimes moving towards ethereal but never getting boring. Instantly captivating and thoroughly enthralling, The Romanovs are one of the best bands that I’ve heard any time recently. While all that is currently available is the ten song …and the Moon was Hungry… album, I’m sure we will be hearing more from this band in the future - music this good can’t go unnoticed for long.
